"When you’re seeing them repeatedly, they’re such strong messages that they’re very persuasive, even for people with high health literacy," says Nickel. Another influencer claimed his testosterone was so low he was three numbers away from being called a female. "We found they were using fear-mongering messages to promote these tests and treatments, strongly playing on a narrative around masculinity and sexuality." "It was being heavily marketed to healthy young men and we were finding strong and concerning underlying narratives that we wanted to dig into," Nickel says. Misogyny, homophobia and misinformation are being spread by manosphere influencers on social media platforms and Theroux meets some of the people who are driving this culture. In his Netflix film, Inside the Manosphere, documentary-maker Louis Theroux highlights the toxic masculinity that is rife online. There may be other important functions of this hormone that have not yet been discovered. For example, the genitals may not enlarge, facial and body hair may be scant, and the voice may not deepen normally. Adolescent boys with too little testosterone may not experience normal masculinization. A "feedback loop" closely regulates the amount of hormone in the blood. The pituitary gland then relays signals to the testes to produce testosterone. Signals sent from the brain to the pituitary gland at the base of the brain control the production of testosterone in men. Research demonstrates in nonhuman animals that competition can experimentally increase testosterone, including most notably in males of various bird species (15) but also in others. Theory predicts that, for testosterone, one evolutionarily salient social context is competition (3). Our experiment opens up new questions of gender→testosterone pathways, highlighting the potential of examining nature/nurture interactions and effects of socialization on human biology. These results also supported theory that competition modulates testosterone over masculinity. We conducted an experiment to test how gender norms might modulate testosterone as mediated by two possible gender→testosterone pathways. Vic’s specific point here is about sunshine and vitamin D, which is closely linked to testosterone production. Your body wasn’t designed to do 45 minutes of structured exercise while being parked in a chair for the other 15 waking hours. Two forms of exercise are particularly helpful for increasing testosterone. By involving actors, we were able to maximize the strengths and rigor of a within-subjects design, whereby participants were able to perform the same scenario with direction in two genders, including one that was not normative for participants. The lack of stress axis activation means that changes in testosterone resulted from the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis and not from performance stress (androgens are also released from the adrenal gland, which releases cortisol). However, incorporating cortisol into the analyses did not change the results, and wielding power did not significantly affect cortisol. Cortisol is also sensitive to stress activation (33) in ways that might matter for acting performance in general or stressful social interactions such as the one we used. As a manipulation check, results confirmed that participants were able to act in gender-stereotypical ways. Get the latest in health news delivered to your inbox! No content on this site, regardless of date, should ever be used as a substitute for direct medical advice from your doctor or other qualified clinician. Even with an abnormally low level that is replicated on a repeat test, the decision to begin testosterone replacement therapy and the proper dose requires a careful conversation with your doctor. However, the optimal amount of testosterone is far from clear. Because prostate cancer is so common, doctors tend to be leery of prescribing testosterone to men who may be at higher than average risk of having undiagnosed prostate cancer. Some men who have a testosterone deficiency have symptoms or conditions related to their low testosterone that will improve when they take testosterone replacement. All of this reduces the active (free) form of testosterone in the body. Also, as men get older, their livers make more sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), which binds to testosterone circulating in the bloodstream. Among women, perhaps the most common cause of a high testosterone level is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In addition, what may seem like a symptom of testosterone excess (see below) may actually be unrelated to this hormone. Blood levels of testosterone vary dramatically over time and even during the course of a day. Testosterone is a major influence on bodily and behavioral features seen as male and/or masculine. However, our experiment demonstrates that gender-related social factors also matter, even for biological measures. But the way it’s being promoted to healthy men is highly misleading. Overwhelmingly now, when it comes to health and wellness, people are there to sell you things, and they’ll say, do and look however they need to." Influencers are now an established part of medical marketing and Nickel urges consumers to be sceptical. "Manosphere-driven health narratives can amplify fear, shame and distrust of mainstream healthcare. "When testosterone is sold as a shortcut to confidence and success, it’s doing more harm than good. "Promoting testing and treatment to men without clear medical indications raises concerns about overdiagnosis and overtreatment," added Dr Nickel. "Like many men, I’m appalled by the manosphere and these misguided and misleading versions of masculinity, which only serve to undermine the capacity of men and boys to have meaningful and mature human relationships," he said. 85 percent were published by individuals rather than health organisations, 67 percent included direct purchase links and 72 percent had financial interests, such as selling tests, supplements or clinic consultations. None of the posts included in the study cited scientific evidence to support their claims.
